Speaker Bios
Dr. Ajibike Oyewumi is a Quality Improvement Specialist and an Obstetrician/Gynecologist.
She became a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons in 2001. In 2002, she joined the Lagoon Hospitals, Lagos Nigeria as a Consultant Ob/Gyn. She became the first Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Head for the Hospitals in 2005. She lead the effort that culminated in Lagoon Hospitals becoming the first hospital to achieve the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in sub-Saharan Africa in 2011.
From 2012 to 2017, she worked as a Quality Improvement Advisor at Health Quality Ontario (HQO), Canada and the Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, Canada, in the IDEAS (Improving and Driving Excellence Across Sectors) program.
In 2017, she rejoined Lagoon Hospitals and they then went on to achieve the 2nd JCI reaccreditation in March 2018. Ajibike currently works part time as the Director of Quality at Lagoon Hospitals, Lagos Nigeria.
She also works part-time as a Consultant for the Healthcare Quality Advisory unit of the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Her role is to conduct Quality Assurance assessments for hospitals and to provide advise and support to the hospitals for improving quality and patient safety.
She was a Reviewer of the International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) Self-Assessment Guide for Health Care Organizations published in 2010.
Ajibike is a Board Member of the Society for Quality in Healthcare in Nigeria since 2007. She serves on the Technical Committee that developed the Quality Standards for Hospitals which was accredited by the International Society for Quality (ISQua) in February 2020.
She is the author of the SQHN Standards Guide which will provide guidance to organisations on how to comply with the standards. She is also the author of the SQHN Standards Surveyor Guidebook which will provide support to the surveyors for the organization on how assess the standards in the hospitals
Ajibike is a Certified Professional in HealthCare Quality (CPHQ) and a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
She has considerable experience in leading, advising and supporting healthcare teams towards achieving their quality improvement goals and working with hospitals and other healthcare sectors to meet quality standards and benchmarks. She has facilitated several quality improvement training workshops for healthcare professionals in different countries.
She is passionate about building capacity for improving healthcare systems and the delivery of the best quality care to the patient.
Her greatest desire is to see the Nigerian healthcare system rise to fulfill its role in the lives of its citizens.
Nyokabi Gakara, Head of Clinical Services and Quality Improvement
Nyokabi Gakara has over 15 years in the health space specifically maternal and newborn child, with a keen eye in quality and Hospital Management. As the Head of Clinical Services and quality improvement at Jacaranda, she oversees the customer services, clinical services, special projects, /training, and communications functions of the hospital. She also is in charge of the quality and risk management team, she is also charged with developing clinical service and operational standards and ensuring that they are adhered to in line with the Hospital Protocols and organizational objectives.
Nyokabi, has a background in nursing and a BSc in health systems, she also is a lean six sigma trained green belt qualification.
